Savour the Souk ![]() Shopping in any souk in Egypt, with its different customs of pushy salesmen, haggling, bargaining and play-acting, can be quite daunting. Never sure if what you're seeing is something of quality or a cheap substitute, never quite sure if you'll get a good price, all these merchants plucking at you to enter their store at the slightest hint of interest (and even without it), our discomfort with this whole scene can make it difficult to really see all the delights on offer in an Egyptian souk. After years of shopping here in Luxor for our own products and for other people's souvenirs, we have established our own ways of dealing with this. We know where to get the good stuff at good prices, and even where to find the hidden treasures of the souk that most people pass by unknowingly. So we've decided to offer our services for this as well, right here in Luxor. Whether you want a proper sheesha (waterpipe) with all the trimmings to actually make it work, a good belly dancing costume, cute T-shirts for the kids, good quality jewellery, CDs with local music, or other, less touristy souvenirs like hand-woven tapestries or palm-frond baskets, or any other thing, we can take you to the best shops with decent prices. If there is any bargaining to be done, it is up to you of course (it can be a lot of fun you see!), but we will give you pointers and guidance in that as well. We cannot guarantee the absolute lowest price of course, as Egypt is a place where someone can always find something cheaper and will revel in telling you so, but more often than not, this cheaper thing will be of decidedly less quality. The shops that we use, we have frequented for years, and they would not do anything that would lead to them losing our custom, that we can guarantee you! And we always say, if you got it at a price that you were happy with, then continue to be happy, no matter what some braggart might say!? We do not take commission in any of these shops (a very common practice here), so no need to worry that our presence will hike the price up higher instead of lower. Instead, we just charge you a flat hourly rate for our guidance through the souk (€ 10 per hour (with a minimum of €35 per evening), plus expenses (like taxis and drinks if needed, etc.)). And we will even take you into the Egyptian part of the souk, where foreigners hardly ever come, quite a sight to see! So
come with us and enter a world of fabulous treasures
and trinkets, sights, smells and sounds!
